Replacing your 35/50W Halogen Lamp

Which LED lamp will really replace my MR16/GU10 50 watt Halogen?

With so many LED lamps claiming to be a ‘50 watt Halogen equivelent’ its hard to know
which ones are really up to the job, with the MR16/GU10 Halogen lamp being used in nearly
every home and business premises across the UK, replacing this power hungry lamp has
become a priority for all LED lamp manufacturers.
By showing the simple facts below, we aim to make the choice of which LED lamp to choose
a far simpler task!

Here are The Facts:

There are two main wattages available of the MR16/GU10 Halogen lamp:

• 35 watts
• 50 watts

There are two main base types:

GU10 MR16

The light that you see emitted from the lamp is measured in lumens (lm).

MR16 Lumens
• 35 watts = 525lm
• 50 watts = 800lm

GU10 Lumens
• 35 watts = 350lm
• 50 watts = 550lm

There are two main beam angles:
• 25 degree (spot beam)
• 50 degree (flood beam)

As you can see, the MR16 lamp produces more lumens for both wattages than the GU10 version
this is down in simplistic terms to the fact that the MR16 lamp runs as 12 VAC (low voltage)
and the GU10 runs ast 240 VAC (mains power).

So to genuinly replace the Halogen lamp we would need an LED lamp to produce the same
lumens, unfortunatly there is one limiting factor holding this back; SIZE.

In order for the lamp to be a genuine replacement it needs to be the same size, if we were to have
an LED lamp that emits 800lm the lamp would be far bigger than the Halogen one it is replacing
and so it would not be a genuine replacement.

This is due to the heat sink required to cool the LED chip down, the greater the light output
the greater the heat generated and so the more effecient the heat sink needs to be.

A genuine replacement LED lamp also needs to be fully dimmable to 0% light output and compatible with the dimmer you already have installed on your wall.

So lets sumarise the key things a genuine 50 watt Halogen replacement LED lamp needs:

  1. Produce as near as possible 800lm light output in Warm White (3000k)

  2. Be the same physical size as a Halogen lamp

  3. Have a beam angle between 25-50 degrees

  4. Be fully dimmable on your existing dimmer to 0% light output

We are the a UK supplier of ALT LED lighting products, put simply ALT produce the most technologically advanced LED lamps in the world.

Whilst many manufacturers now produce LED lamps none of them can produce lamps that
match the light output, light quality and thermal technology that is incorporated into every
ALT lamp, the reason for this is simple, LED chips produce heat and without adequate
dissipation of the heat the chip will instantly fail.

ALT have a patented 100% pure alluminium heat fin design incorporated into every lamp,
giving them there unique look. This technology allows them to drive the LED chips at higher
currents and allows for greater light output whilst still dissipating the heat effeciently, this also
allows for a lamp desgn that is exactly the same size as the standard lamps they replace.

For another manufacturer to deliver the lumens that an ALT lamp does the lamp would be
substantially larger and would not fit into standard light fittings.

No other LED manufacturer can come close to producing the light output that ALT LED products
do, we have listed a few competitor LED lamps below and as you will see, ALT LED come out
on top every time.
